Our Verdict

PureVPN is an easy-to-use virtual private network (VPN) service that offers fast connections through a large network of servers. However, there are certain aspects that need to be improved: it is unable to unblock major US streaming sites, including US Netflix, it is also unable to bypass web blocking in countries with strict censorship, and its privacy policy can be considered too intrusive. PureVPN is best suited for casual users looking for an affordable service.

We’ve spent countless hours testing and reviewing 55 VPN services using an objective evaluation process to find the best VPN software for you.

Here are some key statistics from our VPN testing:

PureVPN is known for its popularity and affordable price, but it still lags behind the best VPN services.

Despite the fact that it mainly provides security through strong AES-256 encryption, the use of WireGuard and OpenVPN protocols (UDP and TCP), and has BVI jurisdiction, PureVPN cannot be considered completely watertight.

During our tests, we found some IP address leaks when using their switch, and we have some concerns about their log retention policy.

When it comes to entertainment, PureVPN doesn’t come close to the best VPN services for video streaming. It currently only unblocks 4 Netflix libraries, but not the American one. It is also unable to unblock other American streaming platforms such as Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.

However, we did note fast local and international connection speeds due to their large network of VPN servers. We recorded local speeds of 94 Mbps, which is virtually the same as our regular internet connection.

Privacy & Logging Policy

PureVPN logs too much data

PureVPN, although a private service, has made significant strides in privacy protection in the wake of the scandals, but it still collects too much data. Their logs record information about the date you connected, the duration of your connection, the amount of data transferred, and information about your ISP. Although they claim that they do not collect any specific or personal data and that it is necessary for performance, we have recognized genuine log-free VPNs that work smoothly.

PureVPN, although a private service, has a disappointing history of keeping user data private, which has led to a deterioration in their reputation. However, we have noticed that the company is trying to improve the situation by removing most logs, leaving only those deemed necessary, and by moving its headquarters to the British Virgin Islands, where there are no data retention laws.

Despite these improvements, compared to leading log-free VPNs like NordVPN and Private Internet Access, PureVPN still collects a lot of unnecessary information.

When we asked PureVPN why they think this data is important and whether it risks exposing users’ personal information, we were told that it is done to improve customer service and stable connections.

PureVPN tries to reduce the risk of privacy breaches by considering your activity to be associated with a group of users rather than an individual user. They state:

“…we rely on anonymity to reduce the likelihood of associating a user with a specific activity. Instead, each activity can be associated with a group of users, allowing users to plausibly deny it.”

However, plausible deniability is not a good an antidote to a complete lack of logs. Compared to VPNs such as Private Internet Access, which have demonstrated a lack of logs after server seizures, PureVPN has a ways to go.

However, the lack of concrete data makes it much harder to identify your activity, and we appreciate PureVPN’s transparency reports, including statistics on IPR complaints and law enforcement requests. We also appreciate the statement in these reports that:

“PureVPN is unable to fulfill these requests because it does not store or log any data regarding user online activity.”

It is worth noting that none of the transparency reports have been updated since December 2021, and this issue should be addressed.

Always-on Audit Policy

PureVPN uses an ongoing audit approach, which means that KPMG International Limited can conduct an unannounced audit of PureVPN at any time.

PureVPN has already been audited by KPMG twice, and the results of the audit confirmed the company’s compliance with its privacy policy. However, since PureVPN collects some data, this is not fully equivalent to claiming that it is a “no logs” service.

We would have liked to read these audit reports ourselves, but found that they were not published. Although PureVPN refers to positive reviews from both audit reports on its website, it does not provide direct links to them.

Many VPN providers publish audit reports when they have been audited, and we would like to see PureVPN do the same.

Who Owns PureVPN?

PureVPN is operated by the corporate conglomerate disrupt.com.

Disrupt owns the Pakistani company Gaditek, which also operates Ivacy VPN. The emergence of multiple VPN providers being owned by large parent companies is becoming more and more common as the industry grows and consolidates.

However, we take issue with the fact that Gaditek owns and operates four VPN review sites that are used to promote their own products. In addition, the company has a history of creating fake social media profiles to promote their products.

Speed

Slower Than Most Competitors

PureVPN offers fast country-specific connection speeds, but it loses up to 19% of its download speeds compared to the best VPN providers. When it comes to international average speeds of 80 Mbps, PureVPN lags slightly behind the fastest VPNs, such as Hotspot Shield. According to our speed test results, PureVPN scored below average at 7.2 out of 10.

To evaluate PureVPN’s impact on our normal internet connection speeds, we connected to servers on six continents and recorded the average speeds over the course of a month.

These speeds will allow you to perform almost any online activity without significant lag, but compared to the fastest VPNs, they are still considered relatively slow.

Overall, PureVPN’s speeds are relatively below average, and they may improve before we can recommend it as a high speed provider.

Server Locations

One of the biggest and best server network

We have nothing but positive things to say about PureVPN’s server network. Its infrastructure is secure, reliable, and extensive. The company has about 6,500 servers located in 78 countries, which goes beyond the typical focus of most VPN providers on North America and Europe. Most of these servers also have physical locations.

NordVPN servers are located on the following continents:

PureVPN does a good job of choosing its servers based on user needs.

With 6,500 individual servers in its possession, PureVPN has a large total number that exceeds CyberGhost and NordVPN, which have 9,769 and 5,613 servers, respectively. However, PIA still has the most servers with 17,087.

This large variety of available servers means that you are less likely to share a server with another user. It also means that you will encounter fewer CAPTCHA checks while using the Internet.

In terms of the number of countries available, PureVPN allows you to connect to 78 different countries, which is more than NordVPN and IPVanish. However, this is still less than ExpressVPN or, again, PIA.

Diverse Server Network

It’s common to see some VPN providers ignore certain regions or even entire continents, focusing mainly on Europe and North America.

However, PureVPN has servers located in 78 different countries around the world. They are well represented in regions that are often underserved, including Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Central and South America.

In many of these regions, internet access is often blocked, so it is especially important to have VPN servers in neighboring countries to ensure reliable internet access.

Multiple City-level Choices, but Less Than Before

In some countries, you can choose specific cities for server locations, which helps to distribute users more widely and avoid server overloads.

However, PureVPN has dropped some city-level options. Previously, you could choose more than one city in the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Malaysia, and South Africa. But these options are no longer available.

This can be disappointing, especially for those looking for servers in popular Western countries.

Physical Servers & 20Gbps Infrastructure

Previously, PureVPN’s server network was twice as large as it is now. The company has reduced the number of countries by half, focusing on quality over quantity, a move we welcome.

Today, 98.7% of PureVPN’s servers are physically located in the country listed for them. This is important because physical servers provide a stable and fast connection.

At the same time, PureVPN maintains 69 virtual servers to provide uninterrupted access to some locations where it is difficult to place physical servers. These servers are listed on the website and include countries such as Afghanistan, Bahrain, and Egypt.

In addition, PureVPN has recently invested in 20Gbps servers for London, Manchester, and Washington, DC.

Streaming

PureVPN fails to unblock most US streaming sites

Our tests have shown that PureVPN successfully unblocks streaming platforms such as BBC iPlayer, HBO Max, Hotstar India, and DAZN. However, you may need to try multiple servers to find one that works. Unfortunately, PureVPN is currently unable to access the US Netflix library and will not be able to bypass Hulu’s blocking. It’s also worth noting that PureVPN has lost the ability to work with Amazon Prime Video.

In the case of streaming, PureVPN has mixed results.

On the positive side, the VPN works well with BBC iPlayer and DAZN Canada. In addition, it is also one of the VPN providers that are able to unblock Hotstar.

PureVPN is also able to access Netflix in Japan, Canada, Italy, and France. However, this is far from including all 32 Netflix libraries that Windscribe can unblock.

In addition, PureVPN tries to work with popular American streaming platforms. However, it is unable to unblock American Netflix and cannot bypass VPN blocking by Hulu.

PureVPN doesn’t have a list of optimized servers for streaming like CyberGhost and other providers, so you’ll have to try different servers to find out which ones work. Some may be effective while others may not.

For example, during our tests, the server in London did not work to unlock BBC iPlayer, while the server in Manchester did. Similarly, we were only able to access HBO Max after testing several US servers.

Torrenting

Some P2P servers, but not risk-free

PureVPN is not the best option for torrenting. It offers only a limited number of P2P servers, stores a large amount of user data, and has a faulty auto-shutdown feature. The speed during torrenting is acceptable, but it cannot compete with the fastest providers. The situation is made worse by the fact that port forwarding is not available in the standard subscription package.

PureVPN has a limited number of optimized P2P file sharing servers that make up only a portion of their network. This can lead to problems in some regions. For example, if you live in southern Africa, the nearest torrent server may be located in Angola, which could put you thousands of kilometers away.

PureVPN has an average torrenting speed of 8.9 Mbps, which is competitive with top VPN providers such as IPVanish, with their average bitrate of 9.9 Mbps. However, while PureVPN’s torrenting speeds are considered quite good, they could be even higher.

However, we do note PureVPN’s flawed privacy policy, past logging controversies, and a malfunctioning kill switch feature. This may pose a risk of accidentally revealing your real IP address, so anonymity is not guaranteed.

Additionally, port forwarding is not included in PureVPN’s standard subscription package, which may affect the speed of torrent users looking for high performance.

Other VPN providers, such as ExpressVPN, also do not provide port forwarding in their standard packages, but there are those, such as PIA, that do include this feature. It is desirable that users have a choice.

There are better and more reliable VPNs for torrenting on the market that are worth considering.

Security & Technical Features

Gets the essentials right, but not advanced

PureVPN offers a standard set of security features that are generally accepted in the industry. This includes strong AES-256 encryption and top protocols such as WireGuard and OpenVPN. Additionally, other features that are common in PureVPN apps are available, including a kill switch feature and split tunneling capability.

However, compared to some of the leading VPN providers, PureVPN is not as advanced in terms of security, and it does have some drawbacks. For example, its kill switch feature may not be as reliable as some other VPN vendors.

All the Best Protocols, but Some Connection Issues

PureVPN allows you to connect using four security protocols: IKEv2, IPSec (macOS and iOS only), OpenVPN (TCP or UDP), and WireGuard. We’re glad to see that PureVPN has stopped supporting outdated protocols like L2TP and PPTP.

Even if PureVPN’s settings don’t have a wide range of options, they do offer several switching options, including “Connect to a backup protocol”. This feature automatically switches the connection to another protocol if PureVPN is unable to provide a stable connection.

Unfortunately, this happens quite often, especially when you don’t use the automatic protocol. We prefer the WireGuard protocol because of its combination of performance and security. However, we have experienced connection problems when using it, and PureVPN has tried to convince us to switch to less reliable protocols such as IKEv2 and IPSec.

During our tests of the PureVPN iOS app, we encountered problems with the VPN connection not fully establishing (error 408) if the automatic protocol was not used. This causes all other protocol options to become unnecessary.

On macOS, the automatic protocol is IPSec, and on Windows, it is IKEv2. This can be confusing because these two protocols are traditionally used in combination, with IKEv2 providing authentication and IPSec providing encryption.

PureVPN uses IPSec as a standalone protocol. However, this protocol is outdated, and there are even some concerns that it may be compromised.

We would like to see OpenVPN or WireGuard as the automatic choice. That way, VPN newbies who don’t know or care about protocols could still use the best option.

Does PureVPN Actually Encrypt Your Traffic?

We wanted to check how well PureVPN protects the data it transmits. To do this, we used a tool called Wireshark, which analyzes data packets at a deep level.

According to the screenshot below, when we connected to PureVPN, our data was converted to a random set of characters and there is no plain text data visible.

PureVPN effectively encrypts your traffic, making it indecipherable to spies. This is achieved by using AES-256 encryption, which is considered the best.

It’s worth noting that PureVPN also uses “quantum-resistant encryption keys” (QR servers) on certain servers. This, according to PureVPN, provides increased security and resistance to hacker attacks. It is important to know that this feature is only available for the UDP protocol and works only on certain servers.

Does PureVPN Leak Your Data?

We ran additional tests on PureVPN to make sure your data wasn’t leaking. All results were positive.

PureVPN effectively protects your data and does not allow IPv4 or IPv6, DNS, WebRTC, or geolocation data to leak.

Failed Our Kill Switch Tests

It’s good that PureVPN has an emergency shutdown feature. However, using our unique testing tool, we found that it does not completely hide your IP address in the event of a loss of internet connection.

Our test results show that PureVPN does not hide your IP address when the server location changes. In addition, after an unexpected disconnection and reconnection to the Internet, your IP address becomes visible.

A well-functioning VPN switch ensures that your IP address is never inadvertently disclosed, including in the event of a server change. This feature is successfully implemented by VPN providers such as Mullvad, Mozilla VPN, and PIA.

It’s worth noting that PureVPN, although it notifies you every time you’re about to change servers, doesn’t achieve the same level of reliability as the aforementioned VPN providers. While this is a significant improvement over many other VPN providers, it can still be seen as a disadvantage.

Despite the kill switch that terminates your Internet connection in the event of an unexpected disconnection, it’s important to keep in mind our conclusions about using PureVPN.

PureVPN Extra Features

PureVPN does not have a complete security package like Surfshark or Windscribe. It doesn’t include an ad blocker or Double VPN feature. However, it is worth noting its ease of use.

PureVPN has several significant features that are worth highlighting. A full list of these features and their availability on different devices can be found on this page.

1. Split Tunneling (Windows, Android, iOS): This feature is available on all PureVPN devices except macOS. It allows you to manually select which websites will work through your encrypted VPN tunnel and which will not. Many reliable VPN providers offer this feature.

2. VPN on demand (iOS) / Always on (Android): These two names refer to the same feature. It ensures that you are connected to a VPN before visiting any websites.

3. Automatic reconnection after connection loss (Windows and iOS): PureVPN will automatically reconnect you to the server if your internet connection is disconnected. This feature helps to avoid accidental data leaks that can occur when you reconnect manually. It is recommended to activate this feature to ensure data security.

Port Forwarding Costs Extra

PureVPN’s standard plan does not include port forwarding.

This feature is very useful for improving torrent download speeds, and it’s disappointing that you have to pay extra to use it.

While some VPN providers usually charge extra for a dedicated IP address, as PureVPN does, there is usually no extra charge for port forwarding. Some VPN providers, such as PIA, provide this feature at no extra charge.

A Stripped-back Approach to Security

Outside of the aforementioned features, PureVPN’s security package doesn’t have many other settings. With the advent of new add-ons, PureVPN has actually simplified the setup and moved to an automatic approach.

Many checkboxes have been removed, and now 256-bit encryption and IPv6 leakage protection are automatically enabled. This makes it easier to use for less experienced users, but if you are a more advanced VPN user, you may prefer more technical VPN providers like Astrill or Windscribe.

Bypassing Web Censorship

PureVPN fails against censorship

PureVPN is not advanced enough to bypass China’s strict internet blocking. During our test on a server in Shanghai, we found that it was quickly blocked. Although PureVPN has invested in obfuscating the OpenVPN protocol, you will still need another VPN to access PureVPN from China. Furthermore, PureVPN is not the best choice for use in other censored countries such as Russia or Turkey.

We tested PureVPN on our virtual server in Shanghai to see if it could bypass Chinese web censorship. Unfortunately, it was not successful.

PureVPN was quickly detected by Great Firewall, and we were not even able to log in. Only by using another VPN were we able to access our PureVPN account. Thus, PureVPN is not an effective VPN for China.

It is likely that PureVPN can work in countries with less strict censorship restrictions, and its extensive network of servers can be useful. However, we don’t recommend it as there are better VPNs to bypass Russian censorship.

PureVPN has invested resources in obfuscation technology, but this only applies to the OpenVPN protocol. It is not clear to us whether it uses Shadowsocks, Obfsproxy, or SoftEther.

Device & OS Compatibility

Lots of dedicated apps & large multi-device allowance

PureVPN supports a variety of devices, including both popular and less common ones. You can install it on dedicated apps for Fire TV Stick, Android TV, and Kodi. It also allows simultaneous use on up to 10 devices thanks to its generous multi-login allowance. In addition, you can install PureVPN on your router and use it on game consoles. However, it should be noted that there is no graphical interface for Linux.

PureVPN Apps

You can install and use PureVPN on almost any device you use. There are dedicated PureVPN apps that can be installed on such devices:

If you want to cover all devices connected to your home WiFi network, you can also install PureVPN on your router. This will allow you to use VPN on all devices that are connected to the network. The applet for DD-WRT routers is particularly noteworthy, as it impresses with its functionality. Not many VPN providers have special apps for routers, but PureVPN is one of them.

After installing the program on your router, you will be able to access the graphical interface through the login page of your router. This will allow you to select servers and activate a variety of additional features.

In addition, PureVPN provides installation guides for many other routers, such as Arris, Asus, Belkin, D-Link, Dovado, DrayTek, GLinet, Huawei, Linksys, Mofi, NetGear, pfSense, Tomato, TP-Link, Zyxel, and others.

However, when we tried to set up PureVPN on a Linksys test router, we found the process to be quite complicated. The screenshots in the manual were outdated, and the support team was unable to provide us with proper assistance.

If you are a Linux user, you might be disappointed as well. PureVPN has installers for many popular distributions, but they all work through the command line. This is not very user-friendly or practical, and key features like DNS leak protection are missing. If you need a VPN for Linux, it’s best to avoid using PureVPN.

PureVPN allows you to connect up to 10 devices at once, which is certainly a generous offer for a single subscription. However, it is not as generous as VPN providers that do not limit the number of devices, such as IPVanish.

Games Consoles & Streaming Devices

PureVPN can be installed on the following devices:

The Amazon Fire TV Stick offered by PureVPN isn’t the best among the devices we’ve worked with, but it’s still a good choice if you want to unblock geo-restricted content on devices with large screens. Its interface is easy to use and you can connect to the server of your choice in just a few clicks.

Also worth noting is the presence of a Kodi app, which is not common among VPN services. However, PureVPN may not be the best choice for Kodi due to its limited log retention policy.

Unfortunately, PureVPN does not have Smart DNS functionality. Some VPN providers, such as NordVPN, provide very handy Smart DNS tools that make it easy to stream American content. However, PureVPN does not have this feature.

The ability to install PureVPN on your router allows you to use it while gaming. Ping in our speed tests was consistently low (6 ms for IKEv2 and OpenVPN), which means less lag while gaming.

Browser extensions

PureVPN subscribers have access to various browser extensions. They can be installed on the following platforms:

These extensions are of considerable utility and even offer some additional features, including WebRTC leak protection.

One of the most impressive extensions is the GPS spoiler, which is available in PureVPN extensions. Such extensions are rare and usually exclusive to Android devices, such as the case with Windscribe and Surfshark. It’s great to see that PureVPN provides this feature for browsers as well.

We tested the GPS spoiler to see if the location detected by the GPS coordinator matched the selected server. We were pleasantly surprised that it works as shown below.

PureVPN has the ability to create extensions for Safari and Opera browsers. It is important to note that these extensions are proxy servers, not VPNs. This means that they change your IP address but do not encrypt your device’s traffic.

Differences Between PureVPN Apps

PureVPN’s redesign has improved the usability and appearance of all their apps. We found the interface to be quite simple and the differences between the apps to be minor, making them easy to use. However, we encountered some technical issues and found error codes, including problems logging in on different devices and cases of connection loss.

We decided to download and test PureVPN on all supported platforms to evaluate its performance.

After a recent redesign, PureVPN has become much more user-friendly and has received an updated look and feel. Its interface now resembles many other VPN services that have a user-friendly environment with an intuitive interface and a limited number of options.

PureVPN on Apple macOS

The PureVPN macOS app is definitely the most limited and simple of the PureVPN clients. This is great if you want simplicity, but it also lacks most of the features that are present in the other clients. It lacks split tunneling, the ability to set the VPN on-demand or always on, and reconnect or disconnect options.

There are a number of features aimed at improving the user experience, such as auto-launching the program at system startup, automatic connection to the VPN when the device is turned on or when it goes to sleep, and automatic application updates. These features are usually standard, but they make it much easier to control your VPN experience.

PureVPN on Windows

With PureVPN, Windows users get the most advanced features and the latest updates, just like most other VPN services. Windows apps offer a wide range of features and always receive updates first. Unlike macOS users, they can take advantage of split tunneling.

Most of the features of the Windows app are the same as the macOS app, which makes it easier and more efficient. Users can easily understand its interface, which is just as clean and easy to use.

I should note that the Windows app does not have the auto-connect upon wake-up or auto-sleep prevention features that are available in macOS. However, these are minor differences.

PureVPN on Mobile: iOS & Android

PureVPN’s approach to the iPhone is characterized by its simplicity and ease of use. It has a clear and intuitive interface. Although the features and settings are not as advanced as some other VPNs, you still have access to the most important ones, including changing the protocol.

Likewise, the PureVPN Android mobile app impresses with its ease of use and pleasing design.

It’s worth noting that neither of the mobile versions of PureVPN’s apps have the same level of customization as their desktop counterparts, but this is partly due to the limitations of mobile platforms.

Both mobile apps support split tunneling, the ability to connect to backup nodes, and personalization of VPN server selection. It is worth remembering that the kill switch is not available on iOS.

Connection issues, including constant drops and 408 errors, were common when using PureVPN on iOS devices. This significantly degraded the mobile user experience and caused frustration.

We also observed that even when using the same login credentials, we could not successfully log in to different devices. Even when entering the correct credentials, we faced access issues on Android and Fire TV Stick. For some reason, we had to reset the login password on these devices.

PureVPN’s Fire TV Stick App

PureVPN provides a dedicated app for the Fire TV Stick that installs and uses with ease. It automatically connects you to a proxy protocol that they say is optimal for streaming. However, you can also manually select a more private protocol if you need to.

The application contains a list of servers, a settings menu with a choice of protocols and separate tunneling, and the main connection button. You can apply filters to P2P servers, add servers to your favorites list, and view ping time information.

Multiple Language Options Across Most Devices

The PureVPN team does a great job of making their apps as accessible as possible for users. Currently, they offer a choice of 12 languages for the Windows, macOS, and Android versions of their apps. Unfortunately, there are no language options available for iOS.

Customer Support

Disappointing live chat, but excellent support

You have the option of chatting with PureVPN’s chatbot at all hours of the day. However, if you want to get in touch with a real person, you need to send an email or support ticket. Even more noteworthy is PureVPN’s online support center, which contains a wealth of installation guides and answers to virtually any question you can imagine. However, many users would benefit from being able to speak to a live person for a more personal support experience.

Disappointing Live Chat

PureVPN offers 24/7 live chat support, which unfortunately is provided through an automated bot. Contacting a real person can be difficult and response times can be slow.

The use of bots is often unhelpful and, to make matters worse, you are limited to choosing from predefined categories. If your query doesn’t fit into any of these categories, you don’t always find an explicit answer or recommendation.

In the video below, you can see that we had to go through several prompts before a support ticket was automatically created. Unfortunately, there was no way to talk to a real person in the chat.

To contact the support service, you need to write “connect me to an operator” in the chat. However, we had to wait 15 minutes before we were noticed, and then another 25 minutes before we received a response to our first message. Sometimes our requests were completely ignored.

It is recommended to create a support ticket or send an email right away. The response time is not ideal: for example, we sent an email at 14:21 and received a response at 20:07, which took about six hours.

This is disappointing, especially considering that PureVPN’s support team used to be available around the clock.

Extensive Online Resources

PureVPN’s online support center is the most impressive. It contains guides and instructions for almost any scenario. This support center is noted as one of the best we’ve seen.

For any platform or process, there are a large number of detailed step-by-step instructions (with images attached, although some may need to be updated). This variety of instructions is the best way to find solutions to complex issues.

Price & Value

A cheap VPN if you don’t pay for extras
